Interested in science, robotics, engineering, or programming? Consider working with other like-minded teens to design and build robots for competition. It's fun and exciting --- Search the web, you'll find oodles of video clips concerning the competitions, and you'll see what I mean!
No specials skills or knowledge is required. Just a willingness to learn and contribute is all you need!
Technically, two OKC teams exist, however they think of themselves as "one team." One robotics competition (B.E.S.T.) takes place in the fall semester and "OKC Homeschool Robotics" competes in it. The other competition (FIRST FRC) occurs in the spring and the "4H Ninja Munkees" compete in it. You may participate in one or both competitions. It costs very little to be on the team.
Currently, meetings take place in south OKC near the airport at Metro Tech on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings. (It's not required that you attend all the meetings. Come as often as you can.)
Each "competition" is similar yet different. Both work to improve the skills and abilities of the student. Scads of information exist on the web concerning both FIRST and BEST competitions.
It competes primarily in the fall and participates in the BEST Robotics Competiton. Read about BEST at http://www.okcrobot.com The BEST competition is much more than just robotics: web design, public speaking, artistic expression and design, writing, and more.
It competes primarily in the spring and participates in the FIRST FRC Robotics Competition. Check out http://www.okcrobot.com for more info about it. FRC involves sophisticated, powerful robots. Called "The varsity sport for the mind", FIRST FRC combines the excitement of sports with the rigors of science and technology.
If you have questions about the team, contact the coach, Larry McWilliams, at 405-808-7360.
My eldest son participates on both teams and has found it to be a highly rewarding experience. He's made friends and learned many things about engineering and technology and team work.
You will not find a better group of teens. Christian, friendly to all, and respectful to adults, the students on this team are the type of kids you want your own teens spending time with. The coaches and mentors are Christian, committed, patient, and eager to pass their knowledge to the students.
This is a marvelous opportunity and well worth your consideration. :)
